Ten proposals to make the fashion industry more sustainable have been developed as part of the third annual Sustainable Challenge, a programme organised jointly by MODA-FAD in Barcelona, Design Manchester and the British Council, and linking this year also with the Polytechnic University of Milan and Lisbon’s Nova Universidade .

The theme of this year’s challenge – which was tackled by mixed teams of students drawn from the participating countries – was to come up with suggestions for boosting circularity in fashion through “industrial symbiosis”– the process where waste in one part of the industry becomes resource for another.

A total of 40 students in different design disciplines worked in ten groups to come up with products or services that could achieve such symbiosis. They were informed and inspired by guidance from experts and the whole process was led and curated by Elizabeth Cardwell and Veronica Kuchinow.
