Document 20 – The DM20 Open_Collab Workshop
E
dited by Malcolm Garrett, Jo Greenhalgh and Patrick Thomas

Each year Design Manchester partners with University of Salford to host a creative workshop open to all students attending the annual DM Conference.

There was no live workshop in 2020 due to Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. Instead, with University of Salford as digital host, students from 7 schools of art across Europe were invited to participate in an online Open_Collab workshop led by Patrick Thomas from his studio in Berlin on Friday 13 November 2020.

Document 20 is a printed record of that event featuring just some of the 600,000+ unique combinations of image and text that were created by  over 100 students attending the workshop from their home cities: Barcelona, Birmingham, Dortmund, Manchester, Rotterdam, Salford and Stuttgart.

Co-ordinated by Yas Banks, the images were selected and compiled by five student teams each representing participant groups from their respective Universities and Academies. All students who took part in the workshop are acknowledged in the book, alongside ‘random’ selections of work from numerous participants.

The book is published in five editions – one by each of five participating institutions, each with a unique cover and content as well as shared content from across the project. It was officially published at the DM21 Symposium at Manchester School of Art on Thursday 18 November 2021.
